Many people mistakenly think that jump roping is a high impact exercise that will hurt their knees and joints. The fact of the matter is that jump roping isn’t very high impact at all, especially when proper technique is used. A jump rope mat, however, can ease the impact of the overall workout without effecting its benefits.
A good exercising mat will help absorb some of the impact of the actual jump itself. It will do this without taking away the benefits. As you go looking for an exercising mat, remember you want one that:

Is big enough to accommodate your jumping gait. A mat that doesn’t allow for a bit of moving around, probably won’t do you much good. Look for one that will allow you to move at least one pace forward and back.

Isn’t too thick nor too thin. You don’t want a mat that’s so squishy you can’t jump effectively. Generally a 1inch reasonably firm mat is the best thikness. You want a jump rope mat that will absorb shock without knocking you off your stride. Provides for firm footing. The key to a good jump rope workout is all in the footing and the movement. If the mat doesn’t allow for an easy stride and makes you uncomfortable, consider a different surface.
