Home>Earth is Sending Out an S.O.S Earth is Sending Out an S.O.S
Is it a coincidence that earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, and other natural disasters appear to be happening at an
increasing frequency? Perhaps is the earth's way of trying to send a message to stop the pollution, the dumping of toxic, waste, the
destruction of the ozone layer and the rain forests.
S.O.S. is the universal sign for distress or for someone in need of rescuing. If you look at what has been going on with
our planet, Mother Nature has been sending humankind an S.O.S. for many years. If we continue not to listen to the distress signal we are
headed for more natural disasters some of which will be of unparalleled magnitude.
Global warming, pollution, destruction of rain forests and other natural habitat, endangered species, hurricanes, oil spills,
gas leaks, nuclear radiation, we have done a great deal of damage to our planet.
While there is some awareness of the damage we as humans are doing to the planet, much of it is simply propaganda. Green
has become a trend in marketing, but are companies really and truly trying to save the planet, or are they just using it as a ploy to get into
your wallet?
For profit companies are in the business of making money. They are not going to get involved in saving the planet unless
it makes them more money. Companies that are not for profit have a greater chance of trying to do good things to protect and to help the
planet.
Governments have perhaps the largest responsibility in saving the environment. Nation's control the amount of pollution
they allow companies to discharge into the environment. Public transportation, carpooling, and other environmentally friendly ways of
getting from here to there are normally controlled and regulated by governments.
Some governments in the World do a better job than others at stopping the negative effects of pollution, toxic waste, and
global warming. It is the responsibility of all
Nations to engage in saving the environment.
As individuals we also each have a responsibility to do our part of the collective effort to keep from harming the
earth. What does this mean to you? Take the bus, ride with a coworker or friend and save some gas and toxic emissions.
It means researching the companies you regularly buy things from and make sure they have policies in place to minimize the
impact they have on the environment. Make sure you turn your lights out in your home when you are gone. Turn your heat down as low as
you can stand it and save the amount of energy you consume.
Something as simple as recycling all of the items you can out of your garbage can cut the amount of waste you contribute to
the landfill or garbage dump. Did you know an average family has over 2 tons of garbage per year? You can reduce that amount in half
by recycling a little bit each day.
Small improvements and efforts each day is the key to improving the environment. It is not about clever marketing ploys,
it is about doing the right thing for the planet which is a benefit for all of us.
Get educated, there are many sources on the web or in your local library that can help you think of things to ensure you are
doing your part to respond to the SOS we are receiving from our beautiful Earth.
